Supplements vs Food: Returning to What Truly Nourishes Us

Are We Reaching for Supplements Instead of Real Food?

More and more people are turning to supplements the moment something feels “off.” It’s become another version of the pill‑for‑an‑ill mindset — quick fixes instead of looking at the deeper picture: our food, digestion, stress, sleep, sunlight, movement, and daily habits.

In the GAPS community, we always come back to the same truth: healing begins with food.

Dr Natasha Campbell‑McBride teaches that our bodies are designed to absorb nutrients from real food — not isolated synthetic pills. When we nourish the gut with traditional, nutrient‑dense foods, the whole body responds.

Traditional Nutrition Has Always Been Enough

Sally Fallon and the Weston A. Price Foundation have shown that traditional diets provided everything the body needed long before supplements existed. Weston A. Price found that traditional cultures consumed ten times more fat‑soluble vitamins (A, D, K2) than we do today — all from foods such as:

  • Liver and organ meats

  • Egg yolks

  • Raw dairy

  • Shellfish

  • Cod liver oil

  • Animal fats

These foods don’t just contain nutrients — they contain them in the right forms, with the right cofactors, in the right ratios. Nature knows what it’s doing.

The Supplement Industry: A Big Business We Need to Be Mindful Of

The supplement industry is enormous — and profit‑driven. That doesn’t make all supplements harmful, but it does mean we need to be aware and intentional.

Many supplements:

  • contain isolated nutrients the body can’t use properly

  • are not in the right ratios for absorption

  • rely on synthetic forms that behave differently to nutrients from food

  • use fillers and binders

  • come in capsules that may irritate digestion

  • are manufactured in ways we rarely get full transparency on

This is why so many people take supplements and don’t feel any real change.

Food packages nutrients perfectly — supplements rarely do

A beautiful example is raw cod liver oil. It naturally contains:

  • vitamin A

  • vitamin D (a hormone, not actually a vitamin)

  • omega‑3 fats

A and D work synergistically — they need each other, and they need good fats to be absorbed and used properly. Nature packages them together in exactly the ratios the body recognises. Most supplements simply can’t and don't recreate that.

A Note on Soil Health, Real Food, and Where We Spend Our Money

It’s also worth remembering that our soils today are not what they once were. Modern farming has left the land depleted, and with it many of the minerals in our food — magnesium, iodine, selenium, zinc and others are often much lower than they used to be. This is one reason people feel they need to supplement, but rather than reaching straight for synthetic pills, it’s far more nourishing to support the food we eat: the farmers, the soil, the animals, the land. Choosing organic produce, farmers’ markets, regenerative growers, and grass‑fed local farms means we’re getting food grown in healthier soil, naturally richer in the minerals our bodies are craving. Better to spend our extra pounds here, on real nutrient‑dense food, than on supplements that often end up as nothing more than expensive wee.

My Approach: Food First, Supplements Occasionally

Most of my clients know I don’t push supplements. I use them sparingly and intentionally — only when they genuinely support the work we’re doing.

The few I do recommend are rooted in ancestral nutrition:

  • organ supplements — for those not ready to eat liver or heart yet

  • cod liver oil — rich in natural vitamin A, D, and omega‑3s

  • targeted support when someone needs a temporary boost

But the real healing comes from:

  • Stocks

  • Ferments

  • Eggs

  • Organ meats

  • Proper fats

  • Sunlight

  • Nervous system support

  • Sleep

  • Nature

  • Community

Supplements can support this foundation — but they can never replace it.

If You Do Want a Supplement…

I can help you choose one safely and intentionally.

If you feel you genuinely need a supplement, just send me an email and I’ll share my discount code with you. I prefer to give it personally so I can help you choose what’s truly supportive — no pressure, no sales, just guidance.

A Gentle Closing Thought

At the heart of all this is a simple reminder: our bodies are designed for real food, real nourishment, and real connection. Supplements can play a small supporting role when needed, but they will never replace the healing power of nutrient‑dense foods, daily rhythms, and a lifestyle that honours the way we are meant to live. When we return to these foundations, the body has an incredible ability to repair, rebalance, and thrive — and that’s where true wellness begins.
